Goodreads Summary

""Wuthering Heights", Emily Bronte's only novel, is one of the pinnacles of 19th-century English literature. It's the story of Heathcliff, an orphan who falls in love with a girl above his class, loses her, and devotes the rest of his life to wreaking revenge on her family.

My Take:

Ok now i know this book is very well written but i just couldn't like it. The characters are horrible to each other, nothing really happens expect for hate and incest.

It took me 5 months to read this book, and i could remember everything that happened from the time i read it before. This is because nothing happens. Its the same moaning, crying, depression and hatred.

The only thing that saved the book from a 1 rating was the writing and Ellen.

Spoilers:

The 6 characters throughout the book and incest right left and center just wasn't doing it for me.

Favourite Quote:

"If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger."
Emily Brontë (Wuthering Heights)

I know what you mean. I have it on my shelf as well, but yeah it took me a while to read it as well. Great review :)

I can't believe this! I love this book!! I think it's a great antidote to other stuff writtn around that time: it was so original. There's not a horrible crinoline dress or swooning Jane Austen heroine in sight! It's great.

I'd reccomend Jane Eyre though: written by another Bronte and full of a little more good-old fashioned romance but just as Gothic and sometimes just as violent. The Brontes grew up in quite a harsh landscape and society was pretty cruel back then... it was very hard to be in love when you factored in class structure, the almost impossibilty of people to get divorced and the necessity, really, of marrying someone who would help you stay alive.

I completely agree. Bronte was a great writer, but her characters are all awful except for the elderly woman (I think her name was Nellie...?). She's the only one I could stand and she's minor.
